Whilst making purchase decisions on food, consumers across Canada and around the globe are no longer willing to compromise on taste in their quest for health, pleasure and convenience. People are also becoming increasingly aware of the health risks attached to over consumption of fats, carbohydrates and sugars. There is a widespread acknowledgement that portion control and an inactive lifestyle is a problem too.
92% of Canadians indicate that they are making an effort to eat well - according to the National Institute of Nutrition 2002.
75% of women and 66% of men indicate that 'health maintenance' is a key consideration in their food selection process.
92% of Canadian consumers are aware of the health risks associated with obesity whilst 79% are aware of the linkage between health and Trans-Fatty acids according to a recent survey in Canada by AC Nielsen.
However, this is yet to translate into real action and tangible improvement in health. Obesity is increasing at the rate of 50% in Canada and has been acknowledged by the Heart & Stroke foundation as one of the greatest threats ever to public health in this country.
The consumers are telling us that they want to do the right thing for their health. However, the results show that they are not taking enough action.
The two main reasons inhibiting the growth of healthy products is that they have generally fallen short on taste and have also been far too expensive.
